Maddy's Birthday Party

Maddy has this totally cool birthday cake with three princesses...Cinderella in the middle had a light that lit up underneath!

Sweet baby girl who turned 10!

Mine, I say, Mine!!! Maddy had a few girls over to have cake and spend the night. The rumor is, is that Brittany took a black marker and drew faces on them while they were sleeping! Oh the joys of being the older sister, and the woes of being the younger sister!

Gotta Love this Bad Girl!

Yes, this is the brat I was talking about in my last post. Most of the time she can try your patience like you know what, but then there are times when you just gotta love her!! Friday night was one of those times...she actually stood still and let someone take her picture, and then she actually took one with me!

I'm not sure if she is covering her mouth because she is going to laugh or because she is scared about a kiss from Auntie!

This is the face that she uses when she wants to con something out of you! The innocence of teenagers...is there such a thing?

As we were sitting at the dinner table I snapped at least 10 pictures of Brittany, and Lord knows that is a miracle in of itself! And actually most of the pictures turned out pretty well...

"Hmmm....I think my Auntie might be smokin' something...why else would she take the same picture so many times?"

There you have it...the teenager you want to stay mad at, but then love her when you see her in pictures!! Brittany you are the best!

7:40 pm

So the last thing I wanted to do last night at 7:40 p.m. was leave my house! By this time of night I am usually entrenched in the coach with a book in one hand and the remote in the other (my family still asks to this day how I can read a book and watch tv at the same time...it can be done!!!).

Why did I have to get up, put shoes on and leave my house? Originally, I was just going to make a quick trip to Walmart (I know...I'm sorry Marcie but choices are so limited here in Moses Lake!) for a bottle of DRAINO! My bathtub has this problem of clogging and leaving me taking showers in ankle deep water that is murky and slimy with soap run-off....ugh, ugh, ugh!!! I know that my drain is clogged because of my hair....it is constantly coming out. At first I used a screwdriver to try and lift up the nastiness but the water still wasn't going down fast enough...it required the help of DRAINO!

That was my initial reason for leaving my house (I so didn't want a nasty shower again this morning)....BUT just as I was putting on my flip-flops I get a phone call from my brother-in-law who was still at work at 7:30 last night! He left a voicemail saying how hungry his kids were and would I be a nice auntie and go buy them some food and TAKE it to their house!!! First of all, my sister didn't cook dinner because she was sick yesterday...OK no problem...I can help her out. However, she has a soon to be 14 year old daughter who could have cooked: noodles, oatmeal, mac-n-cheese, chicken or some other easy to cook dinner. Yet this lazy bum decided that she couldn't help her sick mom and that she didn't care if the two little ones ate dinner...so that led to them calling their Dad at work saying...no that is whining that there was nothing to eat!!

Is there a teenage prison for lazy butt teenagers????

If so, can you please let me know? I have one that they can have!!!

I decided to give in and buy them a Papa Murphy's pizza and take it to their house...primarily so the two little ones actually had something to eat....I'm thinking the teenager should live on bread and water for awhile! Once I delivered the pizza (ya know...I didn't receive a tip!!) I still headed over to Walmart...and finally got home about 8:20ish....that is one benefit living in a small town: I can get from my house to the pizza place, to my sister's house, out to Walmart and back home in just about a half an hour!

My Baby's 10 Today!!!

First of all if you are new to my blog...my baby is actually my niece!!!

I have no kids yet!!

Maddy is 10 today!! WOW!!! How did she get so big, so mature (well, sometimes) and so lovely? She is growing into a beautiful young lady...I mean she has always been a cutie patootie...oh memories of her as a cute little toddler! But she is seriously becoming a beautiful (Stay back all you nasty boys with cooties...she can't date!!!!!) young lady.

Maddy is the most sensitive person I have ever met, adult or child...she has a heart that breaks over the simplest of things and sometimes it scares me that it hurts her (I've actually seen it hurt her), but know that this sensitivity is a gift from God that she needs to learn how to use in regards to praying for people and such!

Maddy and I are the best of buds! She hangs out with me A LOT!!! I know that it is because I was her nanny for quite a few years and we spent everyday together, and I lived with my sister and family as well...so not only all day long together but all night too (yes, she would come sneak into my bed at night...how can you resist a cute little Mexican cuddle bug?) She still comes and spends the night at my house at least 2-3 a month...sometimes every weekend.

I just love this girl...those of you who know her love her, and those of you who don't....you'd love her if you met her!

Happy Birthday Maddy! Enjoy being 10!!

How Can Books be Banned?

A new blog that I found yesterday through The Secret is in the Sauce blog is The Tale of a Kansas Girl....you have to go check her out she is hilarious! Besides her personal blog she also has a book nook blog that she contributes to and they did a post on banned books and she listed the books she had read off of the list...

She posted it because this week is (Explore) Banned Book Week....

I thought it would be interesting to check out the 100 Most Challenged Books of 1990--2000, which gives you the top 100 books "challenged" throughout a mere 10 year span. This doesn't even count the books banned before this time period...how many have read 1984 or Catch 22 or The Grapes of Wrath or The Call of the Wild? I HAVE!!!! Here are the books I have actually read off the challenged list:

5. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
6. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
7. Harry Potter (Series) by J.K. Rowling
8. Forever by Judy Blume
21. The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson
22. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
23. Go Ask Alice by Anonymous
32. Blubber by Judy Blume
38. Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George
43. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
51. A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein
56. James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
62. Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume
84. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
96. How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell

And these ones are books that I have read snippets of over the years:

13. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
16. Goosebumps (Series) by R.L. Stine
18. The Color Purple by Alice Walker
41. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
70. Lord of the Flies by William Golding

What is funny to me is that most of these books that I've read off this list were books I read as a youngster...well before ending elementary school...I mean come on why are you putting the Judy Blume books on this list? As a future teacher and a book enthusiast (At this point in my life there is probably hundreds of books in my possession) I find it hard to imagine that anyone could make the decision to ban a book and deem it inappropriate for any reader. I believe that there are books that shouldn't be read by younger children, but that is a decision that needs to be made between the parent and the child...only they can determine their maturity level, their level of comprehension and then factoring in their beliefs about the types of material in books. If I have children I don't ever want them to feel as if they can't read a book because someone has determined it to be..."inappropriate"! I also want to know what are the guidelines that are followed in determining what books should be banned? Hmmmm...inquiring minds want to know!

How do you feel about this? What books have you read off this list?

“[I]t's not just the books under fire now that worry me. It is the books that will never be written. The books that will never be read. And all due to the fear of censorship. As always, young readers will be the real losers.” ~~Judy Blume

Shannon Video

Tonight at cheer camp (Maddy is going to a five day cheer camp and then gets to cheer at the high school football game in a week!) Mason, Aubrey and I were egging on Shannon about doing cartwheels and such. She kept claiming that she could still do a round-off at the ripe old age of 33....I was telling her that I didn't believe it.

Well...here is proof that at 33 she can still do a round-off!!!

Mason = Handstands

Mason was doing handstands while we were at cheer camp today. My sister didn't want him to do it, yet as Auntie I kept egging him on to do them. If you listen closely you'll hear my sister in the background saying, "You're going to break a bone!!!"

Phantom of the Opera

OH WOW!!

I went to see Phantom of the Opera tonight at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle. I saw this once before about 10-12 years ago, and had forgotten a lot of the details....it was captivating to watch again! I love this play/opera/musical....and of course nothing could make a person forget the scenes beneath the Paris Opera House focusing on the Phantom!

Brittany and I had seats right smack dab in the middle, about 10 rows from the orchestra pit/stage! It was fantastic...we even felt heat from some of the pyrotechnics they used. So between being late (my sister) and having a family that isn't much into taking pictures...there are no pictures of me tonight.

Here is the bill board for one of the greatest, if not the greatest, broadway musical ever! The Phantom tonight was sensational...as were the other cast members.

Another billboard....

I wanted a picture of the theater with all the lights on and such; however, it wasn't to be. First of all, we got to the theater just as they were closing the doors. Secondly, Brittany and I waited outside for Shannon and Ernie and by the time I decided to just head back to my car the lights were turned out! Bummer! Oh well...I have the memories!

I hired a Cleaning Service...

On Wednesday night Maddy came and asked me if she could come to my house Thursday after work and clean my house. She was going to the movies Friday night with her friend and needed some spending money. She figured she needed $14...enough to buy a ticket, popcorn and dibs...

So...I hired a cleaning service for a few hours on Thursday! Here is the list she had to complete...not too bad. I mean seriously...how dirty can a house with just one person get? She is quite the negotiator...she told me my house was a $20 job, but that she was being nice and making me only pay the $14....hmmm...wonder what standards she uses for determining the cleaning price of someone's house?

She wasn't so sure about cleaning the toilets!!! But hey cleaning house really means clean the things that don't get cleaned all the time!

Here is my smiling Maddy (after having done the toilets!)

Not only did she have to vacuum upstairs, the actual stairs, but she had to do the downstairs as well!

And here she is with her hard earned money...but hey, that looks like $15 not $14...I guess she got a tip!

It probably means your inner child is screaming at you to let him or her out once in awhile....let loose and have FUN!!!

Disney has been doing amazing marketing the last few years with the year of million dreams (or some other random number!)...and now they are letting people come to Disneyland FREE on their birthday during 2009! All you have to do is register your birthday and you get in free that day. All ready own a season's pass? No worries...they are giving you a card filled with money (the amount of your ticket) to spend on merchandise inside the gate, or offering you a Fastpass deal....they are honoring all birthdays next year...isn't that grand?!!

Red Robin Birthday Lunch

Maddy is such a good girl...she always poses in the oddest places for me knowing that I am probably going to scrapbook it! Thanks Maddy for a fun birthday!

My friend Sarah is such a good friend! She is always willing to meet me for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a cup of coffee whenever I come over to her side of the mountains! I love hanging out with her and catching up on life happenings. Who would have thought we'd still be life-long friends after living across the hall during freshman year at Northwest...Thanks Sarah...love ya girl!

Here I am in front of the Statue of Lady! C'mon, we all have to have the same pose so I can scrapbook it properly...right?!?

And of course we made Sarah stand in front of the Lady when she got to Red Robin!

I'm not sure what she was laughing about...but it must have been pretty funny!

More Fair Pictures

Maddy's in there somewhere! This was one ride she couldn't convince me to go on with her!

Here we are on the Scrambler...getting ready to get dizzy, dizzier and even dizzier!

Again, another ride she couldn't convince me to go on....this was a wicked cool ride to watch though!

Self-portrait on the Scrambler!

Maddy on the Scrambler!

I'm a Swinging

Maddy getting ready to swing up, up and away!!

There she goes around and around!

I love the view of the swingers up high!

Looks like fun, right???!!!

Dajia's Day at the Fair

Peace out dudes...I'm hittin' the highway and blowin' this popsicle stand!

My Momma is absolutely the best!

Look what I got for fishin' at the Fair! It's red!

My Auntie...she is always making me smile for these pictures...and she is usually holding the camera backwards...

I was hoping to be an Indian Princess by taking a canoe ride, but alas, my blond curls makes me think that the Indian Princess thing isn't going to work out for me!

Goin' to the Fair!

Elliana Rose...this was actually her SECOND trip to the Puyallup Fair and she is only six weeks old! Isn't she a cutie patootie!

My sweet Maddy...she always has a smile for me! I'm glad she was able to spend my birthday with me!

Me! This is me at 34...cuz I've changed so much from 33!

Dajia was totally excited to ride rides with Maddy! And I played the Auntie card and promised her Cotton Candy if she was good...she loved that cotton candy!

1000th Post

Break out the Champagne....this is my 1000th post!

WOW!!!! 1000...that is such a large number, and I reached it one month shy of three years blogging. For some this post would have come a lot sooner....for others, they are still a long way off!

I'd like to thank all the people in bloggerville that take the time to stop by my blog and read it....I hope I can entertain you in some small way. I'd like to thank Marcie for encouraging me to post so she can have something to read at work! :) I'd like to thank Nina who I kind of met through blogging even though we went to the same church, but now is so far away....hope you are doing well. I'd like to thank my Mom and Susana who leave comments but do it anonymously (well, they sign their names...) since they are not bloggers! I'd like to thank the random people that have left posts advertising some get quick rich scheme, and even the person who left a comment in Spanish...with them my heart always skips a beat as it thinks, "yeah, someone read my blog and left a comment" only to drop when I see who it is!

I'd like to thank my sisters who have graciously endured hours of labor and raising children so that I have subjects to write about and to take pictures of. Without them, this blog would be pretty darn empty!

Most importantly...I'd like to thank myself. Because, let's be honest, Rachel Ann's Place wouldn't be a blog, well, without me!!! I have to do all the writing (and no, I don't stage writers' strikes)....I have to be the creative genius....I have to be the technical advisor when things go wrong....I have to deliver to you, my faithful followers!

I'm looking forward to the next 1000 posts...who knows the places we will go and the adventures we will take! Jump on board and see where this train is heading!

Zach and Maddy

When Maddy and I were over on the other side of the mountains, she got to spend the night wit Uncle Joe, Aunt Becky, Kurt and Zach....Joe is actually my Dad's youngest brother, so he is my uncle but Zach is Maddy's age! I used to watch the two of them when they were little...and now they are good buddies!

Here are the gangstas....kind of hard to be gangsta though when you are 9, white and live in the country!

Me and Zach. I love this boy!

Zach...picture compliments of Maddy

Maddy...not sure if this is a self-portrait or if Zach took it.

And this is what I ge on my camera when I let two nine year olds use it. Let's call it...

Berries in Foliage

I'll post more pictures of the fair and stuff later tonight or tomorrow.
