Freedom Writers

Wow! I went and saw the movie Freedom Writers afternoon. It was simply incredible. Erin Gruwell, a new teacher with high hopes and expectations of her school, her fellow teachers and the simple process of teaching highschool student, was thrust into a setting that she never expected. She was put into an integration program at Wilson HS in Long Beach, CA during the time period following the Rodney King story. She took a group of unwanted, low self-esteemed, gang kids and made them into writers who believed in themselves. Most of these students would not have probably even graduated if not for Ms. G loving them and showing them that they can learn and that they do have a future. They, the students, went on to write a book out of the diary assignment in Ms. Gruwell's class that was published in 1999 as "The Freedom Writer's Diary". This is definitely a must see movie. Beware though....you should probably bring kleenex. If you want to read more about Erin Gruwell, her students and the foundation they have set up visit their Freedom Writers Foundation Website.
